mibach. moments ago, we talked to the head of the ntsb. here is the latest information of the asiana flight. both kids killed are 16 wong lee jau and ying minute weng, who celebrated a birthday 10 days ago. >> the block boxes are recovered and they are on their way to washington. they inspected the crash site around midnight and are returning to the scene later this morning. from seoul, south korea where asiana is based, there are on their way. it is too early to tell what caused the crash and this morning the chief executive officer said it was not caused by engine failure. 307 people were on the aircraft. 291 passengers and 16 crew members. two people killed were chinese

girls. one born in 1966 and one in 1997. their bodies were found on the outside of the plane on the runway. >> 82 people were rushed to area hospitals. >> 42 of the vick tunnels have serious injuries. we are were you at the sfo and at the hospital, we continue with alex savidge who talked to the chair of the ntsb. >> reporter: good morning, yes, the head of the not said it will be a multify facetted investigation. the voice pit recorder and black box arrived in washington d.c. both of those units were recovered overnight from the wreckage of the asiana flight that still sits on the runway this morning here at sfo. >> the head of the ntsb will be key to finding out certain key information about the plane's air speed and its altitude and

number of other measurements just before the crash yesterday morning. overnight the flight recorders were pulled out of the wreckage. they got here about midnight or so, the chairman herself got a look at the boeing 777. and she went out to the crash site and saw where it all took place and the tail of the plane broke apart from the rest of the aircraft. the head of the ntsb, talked with her and asked her whether pilot error are to blame. they are talking about the plane coming in very low and short of the runway. she wouldn't comment specifically on pilot error and wouldn't say is if there are particular areas where investigators will focus in the investigation as they try to piece together the crash. i did talk to her about how critical the flight recorder and voice pit recorder will be moving forward. >> they are recording now up to two hours and so, we won't know the minute potentially of the

crash and the moments before and even hours before and get a good sense of the communication. the collaboration. problem involving or trouble shooting. and problems they may have. >> the flight recorder on the triple seven, they record parameters and we will get a lot of information if they are recording. and if the data is good about engines. and about flat positions and speed. so, it really will help to paint a picture of what is going on and help focus our investigation. >> reporter: now, in addition to the information from the two units, the investigators will be doing thorough interviews with all the roux crew, pilot. passengers and any witnesses on the ground. all of that is yet to be done. in addition, the head of the ntsb will be pulling surveillance video from the airport. and nearby businesses as well. if anybody witnessed the crash

yesterday and took photos and has any video, that they give that to the ntsb. and that will help them to peace together and get a fuller picture of what took place yesterday. >> they will be back out here later on in the morning and continue piecing today, gathering evidence and the head of the ntsb tells me that the wreckage of the flight will remain here at sfo as long as is necessary. >> near sfo, alex savidge, channel 2 news. two of the runways are now open and backlog of passengers are scrambling to get to the destinations. two shorter runways opened up at 6:30 and all others were grounded for hours. flights that were on route to sfo were reruded to los angeles. salt lake city and seattle. ktvu sal castaneda continues the live coverage from sfo.

sal? >> mike and claudine, we found people here in san francisco airport and all of the terminals who are forced to spend the night here. because they arrived last night. some were on vacation and didn't know that something happened. they showed up to the airport and they are told the flight is canceled. we found a couple whose honeymoon is interrupted by this. they were too distraught to talk to us. a woman from alaska said she is happy to be getting a flight there, to alaska today. >> i was supposed to fly in last night. so i spent the night it airport and now i will fly out 8:00 p.m. tone. >> spending the night at the airport. >> yes, in the one of these red chairs right here. not very comfortable. >> reporter: the lines are long and obviously, you can see people in sleeping bags here. all the ticket counters, the lines are long. and just before noon, some

flights were diverted to or airports and they were held at original destination points. dozens of flights have been canceled and others are sent to other points. not just here but los angeles, san diego. we talked to one person on twitter. and we talked on twitter who said they are trying to get back to san francisco airport and he is stuck in toronto. it continues to have ripple effects and all parts of the country and in and out of the san francisco international airport. >> sal castaneda, channel 2 news. they are waiving fees because of the deadly says crash. american airlines. delta, southwest. jet blew, they are giving the customers a chance to make a one time ticket change if the flights to or from san francisco were canceled or

delayed. we continue now with ken pritchard. he is just outside of san francisco hospital where many of the crash victims were taken. ken, what is happening now? >> mike, as far as the totals. 182 people aboard the plane were taken to bay area hospitals. here at sf general, 53 patients arrived and half of those were children. one of the patients who was treat thed and released -- treated and released was benjamin levy, here is his account of the crash. >> we were too low. felt like we were about to land in the water. the guy totally under estimated, no warning or nothing. right. just like going down. and i figured we will make it. i am just scared. >> well, levy said at one point, he thought the plane was going to take off again after the initial impact only to feel it slam down a second time.

he was brought to sf general for what he thought was broken ribs but it was a severe bruise. people were listed in critical condition here and five are upgraded last night to serious condition and one of those that remains in critical condition is a child. the injuries here vary widely. >> some could be a head injury. could be bleeding. we also saw spinal injuries. and other bone injuries, contusions. >> reporter: now, again, in total. 182 people aboard the plane were taken to bay area hospitals. 49 people suffered severe injuries. 123 people were uninjured and here at sf general of the 53 that arrived. seven were rereesed as of -- released as of last night. we are waiting for an update from a hospital spokesman later this morning.

in san francisco, ken pritchard. ktvu, channel 2 news. the emergency work ares helped saved many lives. first responders helped get them off or away from the flight after it crash landed. when firefighters arrived, they said some were colliding down emergency chutes. >> they described how some helped crew members who were still stuck on the plane. >> they couldn't get on the seat belts and they were cutting seat belts to get everyone out of there. >> san francisco mayor ed lee. thanked first responders. bay area hospitals and doctors tanned to the victims. and interpreters went to sfo and helped with interpretation and they had buses drive passengers to the hospitals. we will have more throughout the morning. our coverage continues online at ktvu.com. it is there that you can find

they do not believe weather was a factor in the crash. visibility was good. there were a few clouds in the sky. >> temperatures were at 65 and winds at 8 miles an hour. >> here is a simulation based on witness accounts. it showed the plane well short of the runway. it hits the seawall and rips away from the sues sell los angeles and there onto the dirt before it comes to a stob. >> it is 2,000 feet from where the plane first hit the ground to the last piece of debris. >> to the left is about 11,000. 381 feet long. it appeared according to witnesses. it hit the seawall as it was approaching the runway. it was flying too slow. about 100 miles an hour. >> the boeing 777 is one of the safest planes ever built. the two asiana deaths are the first associated with the boeing 777. the asiana model was a 777200

er and the first flight was in fast ball of 2005. it has a higher thrust engine which allows it to carry more fuel such as to asia and from the u.s. to asia. >> it crashed at london heathrow in 2008. >> it landed a thousand feet short of the runway. the impact tore off the landing gear. no one died. investigators blamed that on ice pellets that formed in the fuel and prevented the fuel from reaching the plane's engines. no one died because that plane hit a soft field in front of runway. asiana is south korea's largest airliner. it flies nearly 15 million passengers each year. in 2,004, it crashed off the south koreaian coast and killed

two people. asiana carries $130 million in insurance coverage on the boeing 777. no word yet on the insurance coverage for passengers. praise being thrown towards the san francisco firefighters and their response to the crash. we have more on the rescue equipment the firefighters have. tom? >> indeed. you can't do too much if it slams into a mountain or lost at sea. but once it is at the airport itself, lives can be saved as when i did this report back in 2010. >> it showed off two of the flights. and they can penetrate the hull of an aircraft and inject water. foam or retardant to stop an aircraft fire. each of the three trucks cost $3 million. taxpayers paid nothing. >> it is revenues from the airline landing fees and terminals and all the concession fees. >> it is self-supporting.

and we needed to make sure to keep the airport safe and secure. >> reporter: the primary purpose of the vehicle is to penetrate nonhuman occupied areas because of fires, the fact is in serious emergency, people could be burned to death or die of smoke inhalation. you can't penetrate the cabin and save them. >> if an aircraft lands and the boom for what ever reason cannot get out and the slides have not been deployed, you can penetrate the fuselage. and either use water and foam to quell the fire. >> these days, pilot error. and mechanical failure are not the only worries. en p manmade disasters are never discounted or out of mind. >> it is very he complicated here on the runways. we make sure we work collaboratively with the airport. whether it as malfunction or

he shot it five minutes after the plane skidded across the runway. in hayward, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle. he was struck by running outside the crosswalk in west winton avenue around 10:30 last night. the driver p stopped at the scene and they don't believe the driver was speeding or under the influence. today is the first day of the preliminary races in the america's cup. don't expect any competition. the italian team is skipping today's race to pro he test safety rules instituted after the training death of a mate in sweden. some of the new rules such as design changes put them as a disadvantage. today's race which is scheduled to start around noontime must take place even though there is one boat in it. it is from new zealand. rules stipulate the boat must be at the line to get a point.

disaster. one just celebrated her south florida birthday. 182 hurt. 149 suffered serious injuries. the plane's black boxes have been recovered and they are in washington where they will be examined. good morning and welcome back to "mornings on 2". i am claudine wong. >> i am mike mibach. >> we have reporters across the bay area covering the deadly plane crash and kicking off the team coverage is al look savidge who is talking with the head of the ntsb. alex? >> the big news from overnight. the ntsb investigators came to sfo and they were able to recover the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder. they with pulled from the wreckage of flight 214. you can see it still sits on the runway at sfo this morning. ntsb investigators have also moved in overnight. they came in at midnight and secured this crash site obviously so they can continue to gather evidence. the ntsb chairman tells me the

wreckage will remain here on the runway for some time. this is a lengthy investigation and it will be multifaceted investigation. ntsb team got here. they removed the black boxes as well. in addition the chairman. debra hersman got a look at the plane that crash landed yesterday morning. she tells me he the flight data recorder should be key to give investigators hundreds of measurements. everything from air speeds and engine reedouts to flat positions and the cockpit voice recorder will reveal the communications between the crew members and the pilot and copilot before the crash. witnesses and passengers on the plane say it came in low he and its tail struck the runway first and spun out of control and caught fire. >> i asked the ntsb chairman whether they are looking at the pilots actions specifically. >> is pilot error the focus of the investigation? >> today will be the first full

day on scene. so everything is really on the table at this point. we have to look at the facts and we want to look at the recorders and do interviews with not just the flight crew but passengers and witnesses and we have to document this. and looking at what pieces came off first. thousand they were impacted. and damaged. the survive ability of the accident and the environment that the airplane was coming into. >> reporter: the head of the ntsb tells me he they will be pulling surveillance video from sfo and the nearby businesses in the area that may have cameras that could have been trained and could have captured the plane as it came in to get a sense of whether anything was wrong. they are reaching out to the public. they would like to see all of the photos and the video people

may have taken on the cellphones at that shows before and after asiana flight 214 came in for a crash landing. bringing you out to a live picture, the wreckage could remain on the runway for a long time according to the head of the ntsb. she understand, this is a busy airport here, obviously but it is critical that the wreckage remain intact as they gather evidence. near sfo, alex savidge, channel 2 news. well the quick response unit includes the head of the safety board. deborah hersman and she knows the area quite well. she oversaw severaltious accidents and the san bruno explosion and they have more than 132 accidents since it was formed in 1967. two of the four runways at sfo are open. now a backlog of stranded passengers are left scrambling

to get to their destinations. the two shorter runways reopened last night. and all were grounded for hours following the crash. documenting passengers this morning who were forced to spend the night at the airport as they wait to rebook their flights. sal is at sfo and we will have a live report coming up. operations are expected to be normal at oakland and san jose. they were a lot busier as they accomodated diverted flights. a toll of 11 flights were landing there and others were international flights. we talked to a man whose flight from amsterdam was averted. he said they did a good job. they are operating normallily this is a live look at manetta and 17 flights were diverted to the south bay airport yesterday. 16 planes had to be sent to sacramento international. we will check in with officials for an update on travel

conditions this morning. east coast travelers had a long day after their flights to the bay area were delayed or canceled. >> i am a little tired. little stressed. but, i will be okay. >> we are exhausted. we have been traveling for over 25 hours. >> it is a long day. >> as soon as we got off, we heard there was a crash in san francisco. that was one of the options to travel from here. >> those women among the passengers stranded right now at boston's logan international airport. they missed their connecting flight to california. they are rebooked on a flight that is scheduled to leave tomorrow. the passengers are still in hospitals throughout the bay area this morning. >> ken pritchard is live outside of san francisco general. how are they doing? >> reporter: well, mike, of the 182 passengers were taken to a dozen bay area hospitals.

149 had serious injuries. 53 of the patients came right here to sf general. one of those patients and one of the victims who was treated and released is benjamin levy. he was one of the first people off the plane. he described the pilot's actions right before the plane crashed. >> he started pulling the throttle up again. because he realized he wasn't going to make it. >> we almost went in the water. >> reporter: levy, who was a san francisco rest den thought he had broken ribs and it turned out to and severe but painful cruise. he said it felt like it was in slow motion and he said there were no flames visibility as soon as he exited the plane. that followed as soon as the passengers exited down the chutes. levy was one of the patients

brought here and they were discharged as of last night. of the 53 patients treated and two were adults. 26 were children. 11 were listed in critical condition. five of those as of last night were upgraded to serious. and then one in serious condition is a child. he saw passengers with cuts and what appeared to be broken bones. >> i am fortunate. my prayer. and it was a people that was in the hospital. >> again, seven of those people that were brought here to the hospital were treated and released. >> however, we expect the number to change as far as the number in the hospital. and we are expecting an update here at sf general here this morning. when that happens. we will bring it to you. >> ken pritchard. >> ktvu, channel 2 news. >> they established a phone number for family members trying to get information about flight 214, the number there.

new information into the news room with who is flying the jet when it crashed into sfo: we will have the new information on the four people. four people who were at the controls of flight 214. >> going back home. the emotional ceremony today planned in arizona. to honor the 19 firefighters who lost their lives.

they are doing muc checks out there and we will bring you the news conference live as soon as it gets underway. san francisco mayor ed lee praising the efforts of the emergency workers for flight 214. 2,251st responders were on the scene. san francisco police chief gregg syrup said some were stuck in their seats. and the first responders threw up knives to crew members to help free people in all of the 182 people were taken to the hospitals in san francisco and san mateo counties. jerry brown released a statement about the deadly plane crash. he said quote we are grateful for the courage and swift response of the first responders whose action prevented an even greater tragedy. we are learning more about who was flying the jet. >> we are join asked live from the newsroom with the details. >> now, when the root cause of the crash is determined, probably a year from now.

pilots will be one of man things considered for blame. here is what i mean. people in command of the asiana 777, had thousands of hours of flight experience. true of any jumbo jet crew for any carrier. the flight is so long. 10 plus hours, there are four pile lots. pilot and copilot and reloafed by another pilot and copilot and who is changing shifts. beep sides spending time flying passengers, they spend a lot of time in flight simulators. contending with all kind of emergencies thrown at them by simulators and operators. and regular check flights with other senior pilot to make sure what they do in the cockpit is proper procedure. during flight, they go through and cross check extensive checklists especially during takeoffs and landings. so that's why the national transportation safety board will not assume any flight crew

misdeed. no matter. mechanical failure and out circumstances can cause a crash. well, we did speak with a family that was on asiana airlines 214, he was on the plane with his wife and 15-year-old son. they were sit anything the middle of the plane and used the emergency chute to get off the plane. they described the moment of impact and said it came with no warning from the pilot. >> he had a hard landing and there was a loud noise. and we sensed something was wrong. >> i was squared. >> i had my -- scared. >> i had my son with me. scared, yes. >> fractured a his collarbone and treated for severe next pain. they live in seoul and is visiting people right here in the bay area. >> more details as asiana airlines releases a brake down of the passengers on board.

141 are them are chinese citizens. 77 are from korea. >> 61 are americans and one japanese citizen on board and we are learning more about the girls killed in the crash. chinese ministry of education administered a statement. so that they he were on flight as part of a summer program. two killed were 16-year-old girls. >> they had a long journey before it crashed and the flight originated from shanghai, china. some say it was coming in too low and it was 11:27 a.m. when the boeing 777 loaded with 307 on board crash landed and caught fire. now an hour later at 12:25 p.m. crews had the fire ex

live. alex? >> reporter: i spoke with the ntsb chairman and told me both the flight recorder and cockpit recorder is back in washington d.c. it is hoped they remain intact in the crash and investigators can get a preliminary reedout from them. the units were both pulled here from the flight 214. you see it still sits on the runway hear at sfo after crashing yesterday. they arrived here about midnight. the chairman deborah hersman got a look at the boeing 777, that crashed, skidded across the runway and caught fire. >> two passengers were killed. the head of the ntsb tells me the black boxes will be key to learning air speed. flap positions. any engine issues that may have been in play leading up to the

crash. the flight data recording will report how it is functioning and let investigate ares know whether the pilot and crew knew whether something was wrong before the accident. >> so the cockpit voice recorder will tell us what was going on in the cockpit between the two pilots and voice recorders are recording now up to two hours and we won't know the minute potentially of the crash but the moments before and even hours before and get a good sense of the communication. the collaboration. any problem-solving or trouble shooting that was going on with the crew. any concerns that they had. >> reporter: passengers and witnesses have told us the plane was coming in low and the tail section hit the ground first. the tail of the plane broke off. i asked the ntsb chairman if pilot error will be a focus of the investigation and she said everything really is on the

table. investigators here at sfo will be certificate interviewing everyone about the accidents. crew members. passengers, and witnesses. they are looking for any sort of photos or video evidence before the accident happened yesterday. they will be pulling surveillance video from sfo. and trying to find surveillance video from nearby businesses and in addition, there are reaching out to the public this morning. if anyone witnesses this crash and took photos or videos that would help, the ntsb is certainly looking to hear from the people as well. >> we are told that they are analyzing those black boxes in d.c. right now and hoping they will have some preliminary results from the black boxes that can be released publicly. and possibly within the next 24 hours. we are live in milbray, near sfo. >> channel 2 news. two of the runways are open and flights arriving at san

francisco i am are being delayed by nine hours on average. money time, there are passengers who are constitutional waiting to fly out to their destination. some spent the night at the airport waiting to be rebooked. >> many are waiving fees because of the deadly airline crash. >> companies including american airlines. virgin, southwest and jet blue are giving customer as chance to make a one time ticket change if their flight was canceled or delayed. the heroic efforts of the first responders helped get passengers off or away from flight 214 right after it crash landed. when firefighters arrived, they say some passengers were sliding down emergency chutes. san francisco police chief gregg said some crew members helped free passengers who were stuck on the plane. >> they through their knives up

the injured are doing. ken pritchard is at san francisco general. ken? >> 53 of the passengers were brought here to san francisco hospital. 11 of them were listed in critical condition as of yesterday evening. that is down now to six after five of those listed were upgraded to serious condition. 123 passengers on that plane were uninjured and 182 were taken to a dozen hospitals around the bay area. of those taken to hospitals 49 suffered what was described as serious injuries. those that came to sf general came in waves with variety thank yous of injuries. half of those were children. a child is one of the six patients who remains in critical condition as of last word from last evening. some of those who arrived at the hospital were treated and

released and one of those was benjamin levy and after leaving the hospital described to us the moments during the crash. >> there was a water splashing onto the engine. we almost landed in the water. we were hutting pretty hard. >> reporter: seven people were released from sf general and we he expect the numbers to change and we are expecting a briefing from a hospital spokesman. of course, we will have it from you when we hear from them. ken pritchard. ktvu news. we will turn to developing news from redwood city. an apartment fire sent a dozen people to the hospital and displaced more than 50 others. 50 firefighter were called to the wood side apartments. thick smoke was pouring from the building and crews say they made rescue after rescue. >> firefighters say 16 tenants and two firefighters had to be

piece of debris. >> the runway to the left is 1,380 feet. and it hit the seawall as it approached the runway. and latest estimate is it was traveling too slow. 100 miles an hour. >> experts say the boeing 777 is one of the safest planes ever built. it is ordinary cared with the 777. it was inside tree dutiesed in 1995. the model was a 200 e.r. and the first flight was in february of 2005. it has a higher thrust engine to carry more fuel for longer routes such as from asia to the u.s. >> boeing 777 also crashed at heathrow airport in 2008. british airways landed short of the runway. the impact as you can see there tore off the landing gear and 47 people were hurt. no one died. they blamed that on ice pellets

said it is not caused by engine failure. >> 291 banks and 16 crew members. we mention dollars the two people killed were two teenager girls. one worn in 1996 and one in 1997. their bodies were found outside the plane on the runway. >> total of one # two people were transferred to the hospitals. we have team coverage of the deadly crash. we begin with alex savidge who is live with the latest information on the investigation. alex? >> reporter: they are hoping the data is good on both the flight data recorder and the work pit voice recorder. overnight both of these units were recovered from the wreckage of the asiana airlines flight 214. you can still see it sits on the runway here at sfo after it crashed during landing. the two units, the black boxes are back at ntsb headquarters in washington d.c. where they

will be analyzed later today. they arrived here at the crash site at about midnight. deb gore railroad rsn -- deborah hersman said the investigation will continue. the witnesses on the ground say the plane was coming in low when the tail struck the ends of the runway during landing. head of the not said it is too early to say if pilot error played a role in the crash. but they will listen to the cockpits voice recordings to say if the crew had any concerns about the landing. they will let them know how the plane itself was functioning before the crash. >> the flight record are, they record hundreds of parameters and it is very helpful to investigators and we will get lots of information if they are recording and if the data is good. about engines and flap

positions. about speed. so, it really will help to paint a picture of what is going on and help focus the investigation. >> another aspect of this investigation will be interviewing everyone involved with this accident. that means the pilot. crew members and all the passengers who survived and the witnesses on the ground who can offer insight into the moments leading up to the crash. the head of the ntsb tells me investigators will be pulling surveillance video from sfo itself and any surrounding businesses that may be pointed in the direction of the runways and might show what took place. they are reaching out to the public this morning. they are asking if anybody out there has cellphone video and photos they took of the airlines of flight 214, they would like that to be turned over to federal investigators. we bring you out here to a rough picture. i was in touch with the spokesperson and investigators will be returning to the crash site this morning in short order and they will begin the full day of investigation here

were transported to about a does didn't bay area hospitals and 53 of them were brought here to sf general and seven of them are leasted and patients have been assigned to hospital beds. people are on flight 214 and were uninjured of the total injured and taken to the hospital. 49 suffered what is described as severe injuries. at sf general, a total of # people were listed in -- seven people were listed in critical condition. six remain in critical condition and one of the six listed in critical is a child. half of the victims admitted to san francisco general were children. the triage was set up to take in the arrival of victim it is and the injuries varied widely. >> it could be a head injury. bleeding. spinal injuries. ' saw other bone injuries,

contusions. >> of those 53 passengers, who were injured and brought here to san francisco general, their ages ranged from six to 76 years old. again, we are expecting an update from the hospital this morning am on the condition of those who romaine here. in san francisco, ken pritchard. ktvu, channel 2 news. >> they established a phone number for family members trying to get information. the number there on the screen. 1-800-227-4262. the bay area chapter of the american red cross is helping with efforts at sfo. s right now there are looking to donate blood for vick tunnels and looking for blood of all types. following the asiana crash, rates have doubled and some have tripled. best western plus he will rancho inn and suite assist charging $400 a night compared

they didn't have to jump far. >> they walked out of hole onto the ground and away from the plan. when she looked back. that's when she realized how bad the crash had been. >> it is horrible. >> yes. >> it is horrible. >> i left the plane, as soon as possible. i take my baby to the hospital. and the first ambulance. but when i see the picture with the fire. woe, it is horrible. she said she suffered bruises and her son is here at sf general with a broken leg. he will be okay. her sister is in another hospital. and she wasn't clear on the condition of her sister. >> now, all together. en 182 people off the plane were taken to a dozen bay area hospitals. and brought did here to sf general and they were listed in

the moments right before and after. the images he will he never forget. we did speak with a family who was on the asiana flight. he was on the plane with his wife and 15 year olson. they said they were sitting in the middle of the plane and used the emergency chute to get off the plane. the family described the moment of impact and said it came with no warning from the pilot. >> he had a very hard landing. and there was a loud noise. and we accepted there was something wrong. >> i was scared. >> my son was with me. he said he was scared, yes. >> as you can see there, he is wearing an arm sling. because he suffered a fractured collarbone. he was treated at the hospital for severe neck pain. the family lives in seoul and is visiting family in the bay area. >> this is one of the safetiest

planes ever built. these are the deaths that are first associated with the seven # seven. of the the asiana -- 7777. >> the first flight was back in february of 2,005. and has a higher thrust engine to carry more fuel for asia to the you statutes. >> it also crashed athlete row's london airport in january of 2008 and it landed a thousand feet short of the runaway. the impact tore off the landing gear. and 47 people were injured and no one died. they blamed the crash on ice pellet that had formed in the fuel and prevented them from eaching the plane's engines. no one died because it hit rah soft field in front of the runway. >> this is the second largest airliner and flies nearly 15 million passengers a year and the cargo jet went off the

coast and killed two hims. according to the industry sources. >> $130 million in coverage. and there is no he word yet on the insurance coverage for passengers. >> as we told you the ntsb is starting its investigation into the cause. but these types of investigations can be slow going and take months to complete. ktvu's tom baker has covered air safety for years and he is live in the newsroom once again for what the federal team will be looking for and the clues they he hope to find. >> plenty of crew there is. >> what is already underway is a cold logical, methodical. meticulous investigation of the crash in an effort not just to find the cause but to try to assure a similar incident never, ever happens again. >> the national transportation safety board and independent government agency. not beholding to the airlines. pilots. and airports and even the faa

has the task of determining the likely cause of asiana 214 crashed today. solving the puzzle begins with six major questions. was it the plane. the pilots. the controllers, the weather. was it the airport or was it some combination of the above. >> in this case, much of the information is readily available. >> something often lacking when the plane disappears into the ocean or vaporized into a crash or explosion. >> in this case, there are survivors or witnesses. >> there is the flight data recorder to show how they were actually operating. >> there is the voice recorder revealing what the pilots were saying. there is the air traffic controller recordings. >> most of the airplane is still enough intact to be examined. and there is video of the crash from the airport cameras. >> all of this will be meticulously gathered by the investigation team who will

waiting for a different flight. this morning dozens of asiana victims are in the hospital as the investigation gets underaway into what happened. >> we will go to alex savidge with what happened. alex, you spoke with the head of the ntsb about what is next in the investigation. >> well, -- reaction and that is going to begin shortly here. and we are hold they are here on site and begin collecting evidence from the asiana plane that sits on the runway this morning at sfo. >> another aspect is checking the data on the black boxes that were recovered from the crash site overnight. flight data recorder and cok insist voice recorder are now in washington d.c. they are

trying to get preliminary results from both of those units. they hope the data will be good. they arrived here at the crash site around midnight and they recovered those recorders and flew them back to washington d.c., the ntsb chairman deborah hersman got a long at the boeing 777 that crashed yesterday killing two passengers and injurying another 181 boom. they will be listening to the cockpit voice recordings to see if they had any concerns leading up to the landing and they will check the recorder with how the plane itself was functioning before the crash. >> it air speed. >> engine reedouts and flat positions. the head of the ntsb told me photos and videos from witnesses will be helpful. >> it really has seen a lot of changes and not that we have a lot of witnesses but that we

have a lot of potential photos. and we have videos and those can be very helpful to our investigators. we can look at them frame by frame and watch what happened. >> if you havefy photos they would like to have them and investigators will pull surveillance video from is hshorter runways hsfo and might have captured this yesterday. >> in addition. they are hoping for preliminary results maybe from the black boxes. and possibly in the next 24 hours. >> meantime the plane will remain here on the runway for a long time according to the chairman. she understand it is a busy airport and understand that the wreckage will remain intact. >> live this morning.

sfo, alex savidge. channel 2 news. we are learning flight delays are now five hours for arriving flights which is down from nine hour delays earlier this morning. and we found that some flights have been diverted to oakland this morning. total of sfo bound flights landed at oakland and they were domestic and the other were international flights and one flight from amsterdam is diverted and oakland airport did a good job with extra passengers. >> it is 9:57. we will go to loughner with a last check of the weather. >> clouds are clearing and the temperatures are rising. we have 60s around the bay. and inland upper 60s. to another 70 degrees and get into the noontime. and 60 degrees expected along the coast and around the bay. and upper 70s. for inland communities. under partly cloudy skies. 67. san francisco 74. for oakland. 88 for concord and now low 80s. expected in san jose.
